Women undergoing mastectomies are being denied custom breast prostheses by insurance providers because in the opinion of insurance providers, the "additional features" do not warrant the "expense" over the off-the shelve breast forms. Many women either don't want additional breast surgery or are not candidates for breast reconstruction or implants and often their surgery sites make wearing ready-made breast forms uncomfortable and difficult to wear.
However, providers will reimburse $30,000 for surgical reconstruction and/or implants but deny claims for external breast reconstruction in the form of custom prostheses which cost $2,000-$3,000! We must convince these providers that the loss of a breast and/or breasts is just as devastating as losing a limb...and limbs are replaced with custom prosthetics not off -the-shelf prosthetics!
